Which electricity costs can the British Industry Supercharger support?
The Supercharger is a package of measures for eligible energy-intensive industries, not a single discount on the whole electricity bill. Separate each supported cost before estimating any possible benefit.
Separate policy costs from network charges
For eligible firms, the package includes exemptions from specified electricity policy costs linked to the Renewables Obligation, small-scale Feed-in Tariffs, Contracts for Difference and the Capacity Market. Network charging compensation concerns costs of using the grid, a separate part of the package. These are not an exemption from every charge on a bill. The network compensation scheme has its own rules and eligible charges; government guidance describes an uplift for eligible network charges incurred by recipients. Do not apply a headline percentage to a whole invoice or assume every network line qualifies. Read the government’s network compensation decision (opens in a new tab).
Make an evidence map for each site
List site meters and suppliers, electricity purchased, production processes, the relevant electricity-cost lines and any existing exemption or compensation. Keep invoices and records that explain how each site’s consumption relates to the activity being assessed. Complex private supplies or shared meters deserve a site-specific review.
Being a manufacturer or an energy-intensive customer is not enough on its own to confirm eligibility. Check the applicable scheme criteria with a specialist before treating any charge as recoverable.
Check BICS overlap by activity and electricity
A business already receiving Supercharger support may still apply for BICS if it meets BICS criteria, but cannot receive relief for the same activity under both schemes.
